by | Apr 2, 2018 | Whole Foods

Most women go grocery shopping almost weekly. The foods we bring into our home are what our family depends on for their health, both now and in the future. The more thought we give to our menu, grocery list, and shopping day, the more streamlined the process is. The following 10 tips can help a woman experience success in grocery shopping.

Personal Story

I remember those days well. I was a young mom who wanted to be done with the weekly grocery shopping. By the time we were at the check-out counter, my fifteen-month-old and newborn sons had decided they were done shopping, too.! They were upset and wanted my attention. I always had a list, but I needed tips for getting faster at grocery shopping.

10 Tips for Successful Grocery Shopping

  1. Design a grocery shopping list to print out each week. Some women like to have it grouped by categories: vegetables, fruit, meats, healthy fats, dairy, staples, and non-food items like toilet paper, dish soap, etc. Other women group it according to stores where they buy the items. Some women have their list grouped according to the store layout.
  2. Write down when you use up an item, so you remember to put it on the list to buy the next time you shop.
  3. Plan a menu of whole food meals your family enjoys. Note the cookbook and page number. Keep the menus and rotate them so you save time by using it again in the next month or two.
  4. Write quantities of needed items on your grocery shopping list as you plan your menu.
  5. Shop the perimeter of the store, the location of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy. The center aisles often have more processed foods.
  6. Shop organic if you can afford it, especially meats and dairy. If you can’t, don’t worry, just fill your cart with vegetables and fruits in a rainbow of colors.
  7. Eat what’s in season so you have the freshest food. Often this food is locally grown and not shipped from afar.
  8. Learn to read labels. Try to choose products which have the least amount of extra sugar and additives.
  9. When you have finished your shopping, update your grocery list with anything not on the list.
  10. Work out ahead of time what you will do when the children get bored or tired. Try to time your shopping when distress will be less for both you and your children.
