Blog 281 The Bates Method: Does It Improve Eyesight?

The Bates Method of vision reeducation is a controversial practice that started in 1891. It is based on the idea that relaxation can improve eyesight and reduce the need for glasses. This article will discuss Dr. Bates, his method for improving eyesight, and the effectiveness of the method.

Dr. William Horatio Bates

Dr. Bates was a highly respected and successful ophthalmologist who lived from 1860 to 1931. He wanted to find cures for diseases by understanding what caused them. His curiosity led him to investigate and question the traditional teachings of ophthalmologists of his day who taught that only the lens is responsible for focusing the eye and that once eyesight is faulty, it cannot be restored without prescribing glasses or surgery.

He believed that mental strain and emotions cause tension in the body that results in eye strain, which can cause vision problems. He further believed that relaxation of the mind may improve the eyesight. Traditional medicine does not accept this belief.

Bates believed that his method only worked for nearsightedness (myopia), not with old age sight (presbyopia), but when he was in his 50s, he began having trouble with near-vision tasks and decided to work on his own eyesight by relaxing his mind without trying. It took him almost a year to be able to read 2 pt type size at four inches from his eyes.

The Bates Method is a holistic approach to improving eyesight without glasses.

The Bates Method’s Goals

The Bates Method works toward reducing eye strain and improving near-sighted vision through relaxation. It works on far-sightedness with visualization exercises that improve focus. The method uses eye movement techniques to improve astigmatism, the irregular curvature of the cornea.

The Bates Method Techniques

Palming seeks to relax the eyes by using your palms to cover your eyes. To do this, rub your hands to warm them. Place them gently over your closed eyes, but do not press on your eyeballs. This promotes relaxation and reduces eye strain.

Sunning means to close the eyes and face the sun. The sunlight will warm the closed eyelids, resulting with reduced eye strain and improved eye health. Do not allow direct sunlight on open eyes, as this can cause great damage.

Visualization involves imagining a detailed scene, preferably involving motion, to relax the mind. An example would be a landscape border where the flowers bloom in bright colors.

Shifting and eye movement techniques like shifting the gaze between two points. Examples would be looking at the index finger and back to the thumb repeatedly or tracing the outline of objects with the eyes to improve coordination.

Central fixation technique is a theory centered on the idea that, in normal vision, the area seen with maximum clarity is actually very small. To read a letter, the eye tends to perform several micro-movements that are combined into one image. The Bates Method believes that this can cause visual strain and tension. When one relaxes, most of the image becomes less clear until the best seen part just appears as a point. Rapid involuntary eye movement allows the mind to make an image of a larger surface and vision appears improved. A Snellen chart exercise is used in a way to help with this technique.

It takes patience and practicing the technique routines every day to achieve results with the Bates method.

Bates Method Scientific Evidence and Realistic Expectations

The Bates Method is a holistic way that may improve eyesight without wearing glasses. Some studies show that visualization and palming can lesson eye strain, but evidence or boosting vision is not strong. The Bates Method might not fix eye problems, but it may help people feel less eye strain.

Keeping this in mind, a person might try adding Bates Method techniques to their daily routine. It might make the person’s eyes feel better. They might see better without glasses, but results can differ person by person.

Action Step

Talk with an eye doctor before starting the Bates Method. To get the most out of the Bates Method, a person needs to use the Bates Method techniques, be patient, and stick with it.
