When I go for my morning walk, I usually put on my shoes and go on a walk with my husband to share conversation and enjoy the sunrise. We also walk and talk together in the late afternoon or evening to learn about each other’s days. If my husband is not available, I usually listen to a podcast or the Bible on my walk.

A few of the many benefits of a daily walk are physical health, stress relief, and mental clarity. However, even a good habit can become boring without variety. Here are some practical tips to help you boost the enjoyment of your walk.

  1. Vary Your Route
    • Try new streets parks or nature trails
    • Use Google Maps to discover new paths
    • The novelty of a new walk helps keep your walks mentally stimulating
  2. Create a Walking Playlist or Listen to Podcasts
    • Make an energizing music playlist to listen to in the morning and/or a calming music play list to listen to in the evening
    • Explore podcasts or audiobooks to turn walking time into “me time.”
  3. Walk with a Friend (or a Dog!)
    • Turn your walk into a social activity
    • Dogs provide motivation and companionship
    • Virtual walking buddies via fitness apps are another possibility
  4. Dress for Comfort and Weather
    • Wear proper shoes and weather-appropriate clothing
    • Stay comfortable and prevent discomfort that can ruin your experience and make you less likely to walk in the future
  5. Incorporate stretching or light exercises
    • Stretch before starting your walk
    • Stop midway to do a few stretches or lunges
    • Stretching helps prevent stiffness and light exercises boost energy
  6. Set a Goal
    • Try setting step or distance goals
    • Use a fitness tracker or smartphone app to measure your progress
  7. Walk at Different Times of the Day
    • Morning walks offer sunrise morning sunlight and peaceful walks
    • Evening walks help unwind and reflect

Walking doesn’t have to be routine or boring. It can bring physical health from moving your body, relief from the day’s stresses, and mental clarity as you take time to think through solutions to problems or talk with your friend about what is going on in your life.
