Chiropractic is a hands-on therapy based on the theory that subluxations in the spine may cause medical disorders. The treatments usually involve adjusting the spine so that a person’s body can heal itself. The therapy has been shown to be effective in treating low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Chiropractic is the third largest health care career in the United States. It is the most commonly used profession in the holistic world of healing. Students who carry heavy backpacks of books, computers, lunches, and water bottles can benefit from seeing a chiropractor. Chiropractic is effective for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged students, and adolescents.
Personal Story
Scoliosis is curvature of the spine. I have had this condition since I was ten years old. My spine’s shape is called an “s-curve.” Chiropractic care helps me manage the discomfort I have from this disorder. My family uses chiropractic care for both scoliosis and general spine health.
Chiropractic Effectiveness
Chiropractors are trained in problems dealing with the spine and in the clinical examination and diagnosis of the entire human body. Their training includes science courses like anatomy, physiology, and pathology-comparable to that of medical or osteopathic doctors.
- Chiropractic’s effectiveness is being accepted by governmental agencies for certain conditions like low back pain, tension headaches.
- Chiropractors make recommendations for total well-being of their patients. They counsel patients on lifestyle modifications such as weight loss or smoking cessation. Many chiropractors offer nutritional advice to their patients.
- Chiropractic care for asthma, infantile colic, ear infection, high blood pressure, scoliosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and migraine headaches, and other conditions are being researched.
- Chiropractors know how to diagnose many diseases or disorders and refer their patients to medical doctors or other practitioners for further help.

A Chiropractor’s View of Chiropractic
“God designed our bodies with the ability to heal itself, if the body cannot do what it is designed to do, sometimes it needs some help, whether it be physical medicine (chiropractic, physical therapy, personal training), medication, etc. As a chiropractor, I am merely a facilitator in that process. The only thing vitalistic about that is that I believe God designed our bodies and that design includes the God-given mechanism to heal itself (Psalm 139:14-16).” Dr. William M. Thomas, Chiropractor
