Blog 12: Fertility-the Key to Conception

by | Apr 17, 2017 | Pregnancy

Conception occurs when God blesses the union of a man and a woman with a fertilized egg. The man’s sperm is the seed which provides the blueprint for the child’s life and its gender. The woman’s body provides the egg, which provides a corresponding blueprint, and the womb in which the new life grows. When the sperm penetrates the egg, fertilization occurs, and a baby starts growing.  The man has become a father and the woman a mother, both of whom have responsibilities to their child from that moment forward. They must make choices that give their baby the best start.

Personal Story

I was a college student and working part-time at a nursing home. My husband and I were for nine months. My period was late. I felt sick every morning. I wondered if I was pregnant. We purchased a pregnancy kit. The next morning, we did the test. I was pregnant! Our bodies were fertile.

The Man’s Fertility

Fertility is the ability to conceive or bear children. If a couple wants to conceive, they can try to increase their likelihood of becoming pregnant.

  1. Good nutrition for the man is critical. The man could take a men’s “prenatal”, basically a good multi vitamin/mineral, for at least a month before trying to conceive to improve sperm. The key nutrients needed to improve a man’s fertility are: CoQ10, which increases motility and sperm count; carotene; arginine; Vitamin D; Vitamin E; and Omega 3 fats.
  2. A man’s fertility may be affected by oxidated stress. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the making of free radicals and the body’s capability to detoxify their damaging effects through counteracting antioxidants. Eating five servings of vegetables and two of fruit in a rainbow of colors provide antioxidants.

The Woman’s Fertility

The goal of fertility is a healthy child. The mother’s body provides the “room” where the child lives and grows until the baby can sustain life on its own.

  1. A woman’s can improve her nutrition by eating whole foods. Antioxidants are as important for her as they are for her man. A woman needs to have a normal weight for her height. If she is too thin, conception may not occur. Obesity can be a reason for infertility. Consider herbal supports. Herbal support examples include red raspberry as a uterine tonic or turmeric for inflammation reduction. Taking a multi-vitamin with 400 ug of folic acid before pregnancy can prevent birth defects. Eliminating alcohol consumption is also crucial.
  2. Lifestyle is important. Try to have less exposure to environmental toxins. Exercise is beneficial. Reducing stress through time management, breathing or other techniques can help. Create an environment in your body that can accept an embryo, since inflammation even at low levels can affect implantation.
  3. If there are difficulties in conceiving, consult a medical provider to check for hormone balance, cell (egg) health, functioning of the ovaries, anti-cardio lipen levels, an autoimmune condition, etc.

Fertility is the key to conception. A couple can improve their fertility by bringing their bodies into a more healthful state through nutrition and lifestyle choices.

May God bless your healthful endeavors!
